What is a General Dentist
A general dentist cares for patients of all ages providing overall oral health care which is essential for your overall health. Dr. Star will diagnose, treat and coordinate all procedures to care for your dental health. Sometimes Dr. Star will also refer you to a dental specialist for treatment, but you will return to him for your overall care.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth Whitening, or as some people say, Bleaching is the lightening of discolored teeth. Teeth become discolored for many reasons: age, stains from coffee, tea or cigarettes or some medications and some people naturally have darker teeth
Cosmetic Dentistry
Do you have broken, chipped, discolored or misshapen teeth? Do you want a better smile with whiter, brighter and healthy looking teeth? Have you been wondering about veneers, whitening, bonding, bleaching or implants? Dr. Star can answer your questions about all of these oral care treatments to improve your smile. Sometimes these improvements are not simply cosmetic, but will improve your bite and your overall health. A Cosmetic Dentist, like Dr. Star will help you to improve your smile
Periodontics
Periodontics is the treatment of gums and the surrounding bone. Gingivitis, which is characterized by swelling or bleeding of the gums around the roots of the tooth, is one periodontal issue that can be treated both surgically and non-surgically. Here in our office in Ellicott City, we can treat periodontal issues non-surgically, but some cases will be referred out to a specialist if surgery is necessary to regain a healthy oral environment. Periodontics can be both a cosmetic and/or a health related issue.
Crowns
Crowns are prosthetic devices and are not removable (except by a dentist), they are permanent devices to help with your bite, your smile and your overall oral health. A crown “caps” your existing, damaged tooth. It can repair the tooth’s appearance, shape and alignment. Crowns can be made to match your teeth from porcelain or ceramic or could be made from gold or other metals. The metal is stronger and is used for back teeth. A more attractive and very strong alternative is porcelain bonded to metal for both strength and appearance.
Bridges
Bridges, like crowns are a permanent prosthetic device, and are often recommended if you have lost one or more teeth and there is a large gap area in the mouth. A large gap will cause a host of problems including TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain, sunken cheeks, gum disease (periodontal problems) or misaligned bite.
Dr. Star may be able to correct this gap in your teeth with a bridge which would be attached to teeth surrounding the gap area or to a dental implant. He will choose the best material for the bridge, just as he would with the crown material which could be porcelain, ceramic, gold or other metals or porcelain bonded to a metal shell. A bridge is an attractive, strong solution for missing teeth.
Dental Implants
Dental Implants replace the roots of missing teeth and are used to support crowns or bridges or dentures. A Dental Implant is surgically placed in your jawbone and feel more natural and secure than other strategies for replacing missing teeth, such as a denture. To avoid being self conscious about losing your tooth, a dental implant can restore the look of your natural smile. A Dental Implant can be a terrific solution if you’ve lost your tooth to avoid loss of jawbone where the tooth had been. Bone loss can lead to tooth decay on other teeth, loss of teeth, damage to your bite and even changes in your speech. Dr. Star may place your implant or may refer you to a specialist to place your new Dental Implant
Onlays/Inlays
During your hygiene visit, Dr. Star will reveiw your x-rays to determine the health of your teeth. If he discovers any areas of significant decay, he may recommend an inlay/onlay to preserve your oral health. Fillings are now created from porcelain and are called inlays or onlays.Your inlay/onlay will be created in a lab and bonded to your tooth here in our office in Ellicott City by Dr. Star . The inlay or onlay will cover most of the tooth and will help to protect it from futher damage and decay. Sometimes gold is recommended for your inlay/onlay instead of porcelain for durability, the cost is comparable. To place an inlay/onlay, Dr. Star will clean out the affected area and then place the inlay/onlay into the remaining tooth. Occasionally there is some sensitivity, but Dr. Star will shape the inlay/onlay area to maintain a comfortable bite. Onlays/inlays are permanent and can be maintained through proper oral hygiene.
Extractions
Saving your teeth is our top priority. We will do our very best to protect and care for your original teeth, however sometimes we must extract or remove a tooth because it cannot be saved or because it is hindering your overall oral health. It may have a serious infection that has reached deep in to your bone or decay that has destroyed most of the tooth or it could be that there isn’t enough room in your mouth to accommodate the tooth. Regardless of why we must extract your tooth Dr. Star will care for you and your oral health. He will take x-rays to examine your tooth and gums, then he will numb you with a local anethestic. When your tooth is removed, he will want you to keep the area clean and will provide information to you about how to care for the area. You will want to use a cold pack on the area and avoid strenuous activity, drinking through a straw, smoking and hot liquids for at least 3-5 days after the extraction. We also suggest rinsing with salt water
to encourage healing. Pain should subside within 3-14 days, but if it continues please call Dr. Star here at the office.
